Unfortunately, advances in smartphone technology have made it that much easier for predators to spy on, photograph, and secretly record unsuspecting women. On the flip side of things, smartphones have also made it easier to record this repulsive behavior and catch these predators in the act.
At a Target in Greenville, North Carolina, footage went viral of a young man secretly trying to film underneath a woman’s skirt. In the video, the man can be seen crouching down behind the woman, then sliding his phone underneath her skirt as she browses the shelves, unaware.
“Excuse me, what are you doing?” calls out the woman recording the video.
She proceeds to confront the young man, calling him out for following her and for photographing the young woman. While he denies doing anything wrong and pleads that he isn’t “that kind of person,” the video clearly proves his guilt.
The woman who recorded the video brought the incident to the attention of store security, who then called the police. The man, identified as 21-year-old Thomas Ryan Elliott, was arrested and charged with secret peeping, a felony in North Carolina.

The video was quickly posted to social media, where Elliott’s actions were widely condemned.
“Dude gets what he deserved!” said one commenter.
“Wow, this woman is a hero! Bless her for catching him,” said another.
After Elliott’s arrest, it came to light that he had been working as a volunteer at Eastern Elementary School in Greenville at the time of the incident.
“We are disturbed and deeply concerned by video footage of the individual that has been shared on social media and news outlets, and based on the footage, the individual will not be returning to our campuses as a volunteer or hired as an employee,” said Tom McClellan, a spokesman for the school system.
Elliott was also fired from Opendoor Church in Winterval, although his affiliation with the church was not immediately made clear.

In light of Elliott’s actions and his role as a volunteer at an elementary school, police have received a warrant to search the man’s cell phone for any inappropriate photos of women or children. According to the details of the search warrant, Elliott denied any wrongdoing and showed the police the recent pictures on his cell phone. The search warrant allows police to search through video files, text messages, photographs, and any deleted information that can be recovered through a forensic examination. So far, police have not found any inappropriate photos of children on Elliott’s phone.
After reviewing the security footage at Target, Elliott is now facing two additional charges of felony secret peeping. Members of the Clayton Police Department arrested him Tuesday night and booked him into the Johnson County Detention Center. He had his first court appearance on Tuesday, and as of Wednesday, April 17th, Elliott is out on bond awaiting a trial for his charges.
While many of these incidents go unnoticed or unreported, Thomas Elliott is the rare case of justice served swiftly. No matter what sentence he receives for his crimes, he serves as a powerful example of what can happen when a predator gets caught.
