MatPat, aka Matthew Robert Patrick, surprised fans this week by announcing he’s leaving his popular YouTube channels Game Theory, Film Theory, Food Theory, and Style Theory. The 36-year-old internet celeb shared that his final episode on these channels will be on March 9th after growing them for the past 13 years. Initially teasing with “send a tweet, we’re all done here,” MatPat later opened up about his reasons and future plans.
With tears in his eyes at times, MatPat expressed his continued love for analyzing video games, movies, food, and fashion. However, he believes it’s time to move on to the next chapter of his life and career. “I don’t love the late nights, and Steph and I have been prioritizing work for over a decade,” he said. The decision was driven by a desire to spend more time with his young son and rekindle quality time with his spouse. MatPat also hinted at a wish to leave on a high note, with 2022 being the channels’ most-watched year ever.
Taking Over the Channel
The online star reflected on going from a young YouTuber to a highly recognized and influential internet personality. He expressed pride in the community and culture created around theorizing and overanalyzing media. “I’ve always envisioned these channels as a place where we could spotlight all sorts of creators,” MatPat remarked.
“I think now it’s time to pass it on to the next generation.”

MatPat’s Future Plans
While the new lineup brings its own style to the channels, MatPat assured fans that he’s not stepping away entirely. He will continue as a creative director behind the scenes and teased ongoing online activity with new projects in development. “I’ll be on GTLive indefinitely,” MatPat confirmed, talking about the lively show he hosts with his wife, Steph, on their shared channel. He also teased an upcoming live fashion show on Style Theory and more.
With over 30 million subscribers across his channels, MatPat has amassed one of the largest followings on YouTube. His analytical approach to gaming and pop culture earned him the nickname “The Internet’s Smartest Man.”
