In June 2023, a 14-year-old girl found herself in a serious situation. The police reported that she set off a firework on a public bus in Toronto. The young girl, whose identity is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is facing charges of mischief endangering life.
The Toronto Transit Commission reports that the incident is one of seven involving individuals being careless with fireworks on its vehicles. However, connection between the cases show uncertainty. A 22-second video shared on Twitter captures the incident, showing a teenager smiling while lighting a big firework in the middle of the bus. She directs the firework toward the back of the bus, causing passengers to crouch down, cover their heads, and start screaming.
This happened on a TTC bus around Kingston Road and Guildwood Parkway, according to the police. Passengers crammed the bus, but they all luckily left unscathed. Marvin Alfred, president of the ATU Local 113, described the action as “extremely irresponsible,” especially since the firework was ignited in a closed space, putting innocent people in danger.
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is investigating other instances of fireworks going off in their buses. Seven cases occurred on TTC vehicles over a span of just nine days. They are trying to understand why this is happening and ensure it doesn’t occur again.
